CHICAGO — Participants in a pilot study rated comfort and soothing higher with I-Drop MGD compared with their habitual eye drops, according to a poster presented at Optometry’s Meeting.

I-Drop MGD, manufactured by I-MED Pharma in Montreal, is a preservative-free artificial tear that contains viscoadaptive hyaluronic acid, a lipid component (phosphorylcholine) and glycerin to support integration, stabilization and enhancement of the tear film, in addition to hydrating the ocular surface, lead author Alison Ng, PhD, BSc (Hons), MCOptom, FAAO, told Healio.

Researchers enrolled 10 participants with established dry eye disease who habitually used artificial tears or ocular lubricating drops at least once a day for the past 30 days to manage their symptoms, Ng, a clinical scientist at the Centre for Ocular Research & Education at the University of Waterloo School of Optometry & Vision Science, said.

In the second part of this two-part study, participants were given a bottle of I-Drop MGD to use bilaterally at least once a day for 7 days and asked to self-report comfort, dryness, soothing and quality of vision.

Researchers also collected participant Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness Questionnaire (SPEED) scores.

“These ratings were compared with the ratings that were collected after 7 days use of the participants’ habitual eye drops, prior to their exposure to I-Drop MGD,” Ng said.

Subjective ratings for comfort and soothing were significantly greater with I-Drop MGD compared with the participants’ habitual eye drops, she said.

“Although improvements in subjective ratings for dryness and quality of vision were observed, these did not reach statistical significance,” Ng said. “There was a statistically significant and clinically relevant 12-point reduction in OSDI score after using I-Drop MGD for 7 days compared to habitual drops. A similarly statistically significant 4-point reduction in SPEED score was observed.
