NEW ORLEANS – Alcon announced that Dailies Total1 for Astigmatism, a Water Gradient soft contact lens, is now available nationwide in 2,300 parameters.

The company also reported during a press conference here at SECO that Systane Complete Preservative-Free Lubricating Eye Drops are now available over the counter.

“Dailies Total1 for Astigmatism, without a doubt, is one of the most anticipated launches,” Rick Weisbarth, OD, FAAO, vice president of professional affairs for Alcon U.S. Vision Care, told Healio in an interview. “Practitioners have been asking about it for years.”

The spherical version of the lens launched in the U.S. in 2013, he said.

“It was 10 years in the making,” Weisbarth said. “We had over 100 scientists working on it, with more than $100 million in research and development investment. Over 100 clinical studies were done on the material before it was launched.”

He continued, “It is our ultimate lens for patients who need ultimate comfort in a toric lens. We see this as a one-two punch with Prescision1 for Astigmatism.”

Systane Complete Preservative-Free Lubricating Eye Drops are now available online and at retailers, he said.

He noted that the preservative-containing version of the product will still be available.

Alcon’s Total30, a monthly replacement Water Gradient contact lens, was launched in November 2021.

“Response has been fantastic,” Weisbarth said. “There hasn’t been any innovation in the reusable category in over a decade, and we find there are still a number of patients who want to wear a reusable lens. Daily disposables aren’t for everyone.”

He said Total30 provides moisture throughout the lens, starting at 55% in the middle and going out to 100% in the periphery.

“We see doctors using this for new patients but also for patients who have been using a 2-week or monthly lens and say they’re doing OK, not great, with some comfort issues,” he added. “We’re hearing stories about how it’s the most comfortable lens patients have ever tried. Some patients have said it’s like cashmere compared to polyester.”

Weisbarth said a large market exists for such a lens because more than 60% of new fits are still in reusable lenses.

He said a Total30 lens for astigmatism is in the works, with a tentative launch later this year.
