One year after CooperVision launched its plastic neutral contact lens, the program has produced substantial environmental and social impact, according to a company press release.

In partnership with Plastic Bank, a social enterprise that creates ethical recycling ecosystems in vulnerable coastal communities, the program has prevented the equivalent of 28 million plastic bottles from entering oceans and has helped 171 communities secure necessities, such as clean water and school tuition, in exchange for ocean-bound plastics.

The partnership is the leading plastic neutrality initiative in the contact lens industry, according to CooperVision.

In 2022, the program is projected to prevent the equivalent of 90 million plastic bottles from polluting oceans — more than three times the amount collected in 2021 — thanks to efforts from nearly 30 CooperVision subsidiaries in Europe, North America, Asia and South America.

“There is no single approach that achieves sustainability, so we need to manage plastic use on many fronts,” Dan McBride, executive vice president and chief operating officer of CooperCompanies, stated in the release. “There is no finish line either, so we invite contact lens wearers and the rest of the eye care industry to join us.”
