VIDEO: Estimates project 300 million to be visually impaired in 2050

BOSTON – Study results presented here at the American Academy of Optometry annual meeting indicate that 300 million people around the world will be visually impaired – classified as 20/40 or worse vision – in 2050.

Mark A. Bullimore, MCOptom, PhD, FAAO, and colleagues made these projections based on estimates of the world population, assuming a 50% prevalence of myopia and estimates of the distribution of myopia.

“We can also show that by just reducing the level of myopia by 1 D we can significantly impact the number of visually impaired,” he said.
