BOSTON – The American Academy of Optometry annual meeting marked the official launch of Alcon’s Total30, a monthly replacement Water Gradient contact lens, executives announced at a company-sponsored press conference.
“Six out of 10 contact lens wearers are still in reusable lenses,” Rick Weisbarth, OD, FAAO, vice president of professional affairs for U.S. Vision Care at Alcon, said during the event. “We still believe daily disposable is the safest way to wear contact lenses, but we decided to create a better reusable lens.
“The goal is to have a product that feels like nothing on day 30,” he added.
The company said in a press release that the science of Total30 was born from the Water Gradient technology of Dailies Total1.
Alcon senior director Erich Bauman, OD, noted at the press conference that the lens employs Celligent (cellular intelligent) Technology, which the company described in a press release is the combination of a biomimetic surface and a unique lens chemistry to help resist bacteria and lipid deposits.
Alcon President and General Manager Andy Pawson said at the press conference, “There’s been no breakthrough innovations in the reusable segment in 10 years. General comfort issues experienced in the reusable segment cause contact lens dropout.
“This is a compelling reason to innovate with the proprietary Water Gradient technology that approaches 100% water on the ocular surface,” he added.
