Special issue of IOVS features white papers from myopia group

The International Myopia Institute announced that it released a set of white papers and yearly digest on myopia in a special edition of Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science.

This year’s white papers from the International Myopia Institute (IMI) detailed continued progress in myopia diagnosis, treatment, prevention and awareness, and it is the second series to be published by the IMI, the group said in a press release. The inaugural white papers were published in 2019 through the peer-reviewed journal Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science (IOVS).

“The original IMI 2019 white papers helped change the way clinicians thought of myopia – as an ocular condition vs. a purely refractive issue – the latest IMI 2021 whitepapers continue to build on the evidence base for implementing myopia management,” Monica Jong, BOptom, PhD executive director of the IMI, said in the release. “Practitioners, researchers, industry and peak health bodies will find the IMI 2021 white papers valuable.”

According to the release, the 2021 white papers contain research, recommendations and updates from the top global myopia experts.

“Myopia is estimated to affect half the world’s population by 2050. Vision impairment due to uncorrected myopia and myopia-related complication is on the rise and expected to increase further,” Padmaja Sankaridurg, PhD, chair of the IMI Impact of Myopia Taskforce and leader of the Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI) myopia program, said in the release. “BHVI and the IMI are deeply committed to disseminating the latest evidence-based myopia research for the benefit of all.”
