Alcon introduces contact lenses for astigmatism, monthly reusables

ATLANTA — Alcon presented the latest innovations to the company’s products at this year’s SECO meeting, including Precision1 for Astigmatism, a new entry to the Systane eye drop line and news of an upcoming monthly reusable contact lens.
“Everyone knows that the past year has been very challenging for the industry as well as the optometric profession,” Rick Weisbarth, OD, FAAO, vice president of professional affairs at Alcon U.S. Vision Care, said during the virtual presentation. “We have continued to identify areas where eye care practitioners needed the full power of the Alcon organization to support their practices as well as their patients.”
Alcon introduced Precision1 for Astigmatism, a daily disposable silicone hydrogel toric lens available throughout the U.S.
The company also introduced Systane Hydration Multi-Dose Preservative-Free (MDPF) Lubricant Eye Drops for dry eye relief, made with sodium hyaluronate and HP-Guar.
Additionally, company executives noted the July 2020 FDA approval of over-the-counter Pataday Once Daily Relief Extra Strength, following approval of once- and twice-daily formulas early last year for OTC availability.
“We think this will benefit the patient population, having an OTC family of Pataday, increasing access for people suffering from eye allergies,” Sean Clark, vice president and general manager of Alcon U.S. Vision Care, said. “While they may still receive a doctor recommendation after a visit, they no longer need to see a doctor for a prescription.”
Alcon plans to launch in 2022 its Total 30 reusable contact lenses, designed to last 30 days and using the same water gradient technology as the company’s Dailies Total 1.
“The surface properties of Total 30 are biomimicking, designed to mimic the surface of the cornea ... that ultimately makes it really robust and makes the lens surface stay free from bacteria and lipid deposits over a significant length of time,” Andy Pawson, president and general manager of Alcon Global Vision Care, said during the presentation.
Finally, Alcon announced that this year it will launch the Systane iLux2 device, developed with an infrared camera to allow for meibography as well as white-light surface imaging and video.
