California’s Department of Consumer Affairs approved a public health emergency waiver that will allow optometrists to administer COVID-19 vaccines in an effort to vaccinate 40 million Californians, the California Optometric Association reported in a release.

“Optometrists are in almost every county in California. When there is enough vaccine, patients can be asked to get a vaccine at every office visit,” California Optometric Association President Jason Tu, OD, said in the release.

Optometrists providing vaccines will undergo a 20-hour training course along with the COVID-19 training program developed by the California Department of Public Health, according to the release.

“Optometrists are particularly helpful in filling the vaccine gap since we care for patients that do not annually see a physician,” Tu said.
