Optometry Giving Sight awards grants to 12 nonprofits for COVID-19 relief
Optometry Giving Sight awarded nine U.S.-based and three Canadian nonprofit organizations grants of up to $5,000 for COVID-19 relief, according to a press release.
“I am grateful that we were able to provide funding to such a diverse group of worthwhile organizations who are doing critical work within their communities,” Anne Marie Hand, executive director of Optometry Giving Sight, said in the release. “It was a quick turnaround and I’m so appreciative that my team and our board of directors supported this endeavor.”
Nonprofit organizations will use the funding to provide eye exams and glasses to people who live in underrepresented communities, support sustainable vision care special projects, and provide diversity and inclusion training for organization staff, volunteers and board members, according to the release.
Healing California said it will use the grant funding to purchase personal protective equipment so it can resume providing mobile vision clinics throughout California. It also provides free dental and medical care to Californians in need, according to the organization’s website.
Other U.S. grant recipients include Lawndale Christian Health Center, Mezu International Foundation Inc., Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry, Prevent Blindness, Restoring Vision, Sight & Sound, Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity/International and VOSH Nebraska.
The Vision Institute of Canada will use the grant to purchase new equipment.
The Canadian National Institute for the Blind and Downtown Eastside Eye Clinic also received grants.
