The 2020 Optometry’s Meeting, originally scheduled for June 24 to 28 in Washington, D.C., has been canceled as part of the organization’s commitment to prioritize the health and safety of members, staff and attendees along with their families and patients, according to an announcement from American Optometric Association president Barbara L. Horn, OD, and American Optometric Student Association presidentelect Alex J. Bennett.
“This is the first time that Optometry’s Meeting has been canceled, and while this is the right decision to make for everyone’s health, it is heartbreaking,” Horn said in a press release. “We want to thank everyone for their continued patience, support and partnership during these difficult, unprecedented times as we move through this united together.”
While the in-person event is canceled, the AOA and AOSA will reconfigure several key elements of the annual meeting, which will include a “virtual experience” for members. These elements include education, an assembly of the House of Delegates planned for June, continued efforts regarding the AOA+ initiative, and continued crisis advocacy mobilization from AOA on Capitol Hill.
The AOA will confirm dates and times for the new elements as they are finalized and provide additional details on the rescheduling of this year’s AOA House of Delegates as available.
