Eyeris announced the availability of a new daily disposable contact lens to be sold only through select practices or directly from the company.

The choice to limit availability to physician practices and the company was to protect patients from unregulated online vision exams and passive prescriptions, the company said in a press release.

“This lens represents a phase shift in the market from a commodity medical device (online direct-to-consumer brands) to respect for the doctor-patient relationship,” Jeffrey Sonsino, OD, FAAO, co-founder and chief medical officer of Eyeris, told Primary Care Optometry News. “Patients may purchase lenses from their doctors or online directly from Eyeris. But if the patient purchases online, the doctor who prescribed the lens realizes the same margin as if the patient purchased from their office.”

The Eyeris Daily is made of hioxifilcon, with a custom profile of an 8.5 base curve and a 14.3 diameter, making it “unsubstitutable online,” according to the release. Additionally, the packaging is made from recycling the contact lens molds and uses RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology in the lens parameter label for improved inventory management.

“Many people are aware of the plastic used in the blister pack, but many people don’t know that there is a positive and negative single-use plastic mold made for every daily lens produced,” Sonsino said in the press release. “As a contact lens manufacturer, it is a huge responsibility to provide convenience for our patients, but also to take care of this planet.”

“The Eyeris Daily is available through a network of independent private practices, OD/MD practices and academic institutions,” Sonsino told PCON. “So far, Eyeris has over 650 practices involved and will not limit as long as those conditions are met.”
