White paper: Eye health is deprioritized in busy lives

Eye care is often neglected in this age of convenience, and as health tech start-ups pursue direct-to-consumer models, the role of eye doctors and eye health is being deprioritized, according to a white paper recently released by Sightbox.
“Eye health is deprioritized in busy lives and busy schedules, with the result being ... that people are missing out on much-needed preventive care, with the result in all too many cases being long-term health consequences,” the white paper stated.
A CDC survey showed that 41.7% of men and 28.7% of women believe they have no need for eye care, Sightbox said in a press release.
“Direct-to-consumer and health tech isn’t going anywhere, and consumers are demanding change,” according to the white paper.
Sightbox stated in the paper that it is attempting to bridge convenience with quality in-person care.
The company explained in the press release that it schedules appointments with an optometrist when a customer signs up, and Sightbox pays the practice’s full exam and contact lens fitting fees the day of the appointment. Annual membership includes a comprehensive eye exam, contact lens fitting, concierge service and a 12-month supply of contact lenses, and patients can make payments throughout the year.
