The eye health nutraceutical company, EyePromise, recently introduced Screen Shield Pro as the newest addition in its eye vitamin line.
Screen Shield Pro is designed to help adults who spend 8 or more hours a day staring at digital screens and, therefore, experience many of the associated symptoms of digital eye strain, the company said in a press release.
“Screen time is a growing problem with our society. Almost everything is done behind a screen such as working, learning, playing,” Jeffrey Frank, OD, told Primary Care Optometry News in an interview. “Screens are still relatively new, so we don’t know for sure what impact they’re going to have on our bodies, specifically our eyes. But if you think about it, we’re all staring at artificial light sources for hours on end, and many times it’s extremely close to our faces. The proximity increases the likelihood that the light can damage the internal structures of the eyes.”
Some of the symptoms that result from digital eye strain include tired eyes, headaches and eye strain, which 81% of adults experience, the company said in the release. Overexposure to the blue light emitted from screens is another concern.
“Designed specifically for the modern, screen-heavy patient, Screen Shield Pro is formulated with all-natural zeaxanthin and lutein to help protect the eyes from damage caused by blue light, the light coming from screens. This product also includes ingredients like bilberry extract and omega-3s to help relieve some of the symptoms often experienced with screen time,” Frank said.
Screen Shield Pro is designed to take in addition to a daily multivitamin, the company said.
“As eye care professionals, we must adapt to the modern patient and help mitigate these symptoms and protect long-term eye health. Screen time isn’t going away, and if we’re being honest, it’s only going up from here. We need to get out in front of it before the real damage is done,” Frank said. – by Alexandria Brooks
