The Vision Council is publicizing the importance of protecting the eyes from harmful ultraviolet light in honor of National Sunglasses Day, which is June 27.

Vision Council spokesperson Bridgette Shen Lee, OD, is also speaking at a Congressional briefing on June 27 about the importance of wearing UV-protective eye wear year-round.

“Dr. Shen Lee will present an overview on the health impacts of UV radiation on the eyes, the risk factors of not wearing UV-protective eye wear for kids and adults, and the sunglasses and eye wear solutions available to protect the eyes, as well as establish the importance of educating the public about how they can protect their vision,” the Vision Council said in a press release.

The council urges the eye care industry to host events, offer sales incentives and post to social media using the hashtags, #SunglassesSelfie and #NationalSunglassesDay.

Prior to National Sunglasses Day, ABB Optical announced significant year-over-year growth in the sale of prescription sun lenses.

ABB’s Digital Eye Lab Network’s data indicated a 25% increase in orders in 2018 over 2017, the company said in a press release. The mirrored lens category increased 30%, photochromics increased 30%, and polarized lenses increased 20%.
