Tangible Science LLC announced the launch of a multipurpose cleaning solution for its Hydra-PEG coated contact lenses.
The new solution can be used for cleaning, conditioning, disinfecting, protein removal, rinsing and storing the lenses and is FDA-approved for use with any gas-permeable contact lens, the company said in a press release.
The Tangible Hydra-PEG surface coating for GP lenses requires a solution that will not damage the coating, the company said in the release. Uncoated GP lenses may require extra-strength cleaners, but the coated lenses do not. Strong cleaners may, in fact, wear away the coating.
Andrew J. Biondo, OD, FSLS, of Kirkwood Eye Associates, Kirkwood, Mo., told Primary Care Optometry News that he has been recommending Tangible Clean to his patients for about 9 months.
“Initially, I only used it for patients with coated lenses, but I soon realized it was beneficial for all [GP] lens patients, especially those wearing scleral lenses,” he said. “Its reduced viscosity makes it easier to rinse, and that is especially important for scleral designs where any residual solution left on the lens upon insertion can be toxic to the epithelium.
“Additionally, it is important that our staff understands and can convey care regimens for specialty lenses,” he continued, “and having a simple, effective and all-encompassing option makes it easy to keep everyone on the same page.”
Biondo said patient feedback has been “overwhelmingly positive” for Tangible Clean, “especially by those individuals who have surface wetting issues and depositing.”
This solution, “increases the longevity of the coating’s benefits, including more consistent and uniform wetting and less surface build-up,” he added. “This also translates to clearer and more consistent vision.”
The solution is available to patients online via a subscription program, the company said in the release. – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS, FAAO
