NEW ORLEANS – CooperVision announced the launch of a contact lens fitting app for its multifocal and toric lenses here at SECO.
The OptiExpert app, available for iPhone, iPad and Android mobile and tablet devices, provides multifocal and toric calculators and oxygen profiles for a selected range of lenses, the company announced in a press release.
The app also offers the ability to securely store images of a patient’s ocular condition as well as recommendations of CooperVision branded lenses.
CooperVision senior director of professional and academic affairs, Michele L. Andrews, OD, told Primary Care Optometry News that doctors who were already confident with their fitting are finding the app useful.
“They’re using it to double check what they’ve already chosen,” she said.
Andrews noted that oxygen transmissibility is not the same across the entire surface of multifocal or toric contact lenses, but, typically the Dk/t measurement is taken only in the center of the lens.
“The app can be used to show patients the difference in oxygen transmissibility and help explain why it was recommended that they switch lenses,” she said.
CooperVision also announced in a press release that a clinical study has shown that the power recommendations generated by the OptiExpert app for its Clariti 1 Day multifocal closely matched recommendations from eye care professionals who followed the fitting guide.
“These findings indicate that 100% of wearers can now be successfully fitted with Clariti 1 Day multifocal using two pairs of trial lenses or less,” according to the release.
The findings of this study, which was conducted by the Centre for Ocular Research & Education, were first presented at the recent American Academy of Optometry meeting.
The OptiExpert app is available in 15 languages in 79 countries, Andrews told PCON, and each country has its respective lenses and parameters. – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS, FAAO
