Prevent Blindness announces January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month
January has been declared National Glaucoma Awareness Month by Prevent Blindness.
In support of this effort, Prevent Blindness partnered with Santen Inc. in an educational campaign to raise awareness of the disease, according to a press release from Prevent Blindness.
“Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for glaucoma,” Jeff Todd, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness, said in the release. “However, promising new treatment research is underway.”
Nearly three million people age 40 years and older have glaucoma, according to a Prevent Blindness report.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeCare America program provides eye care at no out-of-pocket cost to medically underserved seniors age 65 years and older and glaucoma exams to those at increased risk, according to the release.
