WCO supports Children’s Vision Campaign
The World Council of Optometry called for governments to redouble the commitment to eye care and increase eye health services accessibility for all to help combat the increase in myopia and diabetic retinopathy and consequences from a growing global population.
The council issued this announcement in a press release in recognition of World Sight Day, Oct. 11.
Effective solutions and reliable delivery mechanisms are already available, according the World Council of Optometry (WCO).
“As the world population increases and ages, we are entering a new era of blindness and visual impairment – an era where existing efforts are at serious risk of being overwhelmed, potentially leading to a threefold increase in blindness by 2050,” according to the release.
WCO President Scott Mundle, OD, said in the release that one of his mandates is children’s vision. He added that good vision is paramount for a good education and a productive work and social life.
He has made children’s vision a central focus of his presidency, according to the release, and said WCO is proud to support Our Children’s Vision Campaign, on World Sight Day and beyond.
