Essilor announced the launch of its new Specialty Lens Lab that creates lenses specifically for patients with low vision.

“It’s our commitment to ensure everyone who needs better vision has access to it through Essilor of America,” Rick Gadd, incoming president of Essilor of America, said in a press release. “Our lab network can now, for the first time ever, help people who need power ranges -100.00 D to +90.00 D see the world around them. It’s just one more way our lab network delivers on our mission of improving lives by improving sight.”

The new line of specialty lenses was designed for patients with complex refractive errors, such as high sphere power, high cylinder power, special parameters, extreme powers and prisms, and strong ametropia, according to the release. Other vision obstacles, such as lazy eye and cataracts, are also addressed by the lenses.

The lenses will be made available through Custom Eyes Lab of Sauk in Rapids, Minn. After eye care providers call an Essilor lab to place a specialty lens order, a customer service representative determines if the customized lens needs additional measurements, according to the release. There are options for various materials and power ranges.

“[Eye care providers] should not hesitate to prescribe or request what seem to be difficult solutions because they think it’s impossible,” Alexandra Leonardi, specialty lens business unit manager, said in the release. “Essilor specialty lenses exemplify our continuous efforts to push the boundaries of what a pair of glasses can achieve.”
