Prevent Blindness reported that there were more than 30,000 estimated sports-related injuries in the U.S last year and has designated September as Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month.

Water sports were the leading cause, followed by basketball according to the announcement.

Eye injuries from all sports include scratches, fractures of the eye socket, traumatic cataract and more.

Additionally, wearing contact lenses during water activities increases the risk for infections, including Acanthamoeba keratitis.

Liberty Sport and Prevent Blindness are partnering for the annual “September is Sports Eye Prevention Awareness Month” program, which provides free printed materials to eye care professionals to assist in educating consumers on the importance of eye safety during sports.
