Med-Eye Pillow was developed as a skin-safe eye protection for patients in both the ICU and undergoing surgery.

According to a press release from Med-Eyecare, this alternative avoids the risk of eye desiccation or injury associated with the use of adhesive tape during surgery to keep the eyes closed.

As an anesthesiologist for more than 38 years, Stephen Gipson, MD, saw patients experiencing allergic reactions, corneal abrasions and other complications associated with surgical eyelid tape. In response, he created the Med-Eye Pillow.

According to the release, the pillow was designed to provide enough pressure to keep the eyelids closed without using adhesive, avoiding damage to skin around the eyes or tearing of eyelashes. It is easy to manipulate and rests over both eyes and the bridge of the nose during surgery.

“Patients have enough to deal with during their postop recovery without adding eye trauma to the mix,” Gipson said in the release. “Our goal is to make the Med-Eye Pillow a new standard of care that’s safer, more humane and easier to implement.”
