AAO announces 2018 award recipients

The recipients of the American Academy of Optometry 2018 awards have been recognized for their contributions to the advancement of the profession of optometry.

“Every nominee represents exactly what the American Academy of Optometry and the American Academy of Optometry Foundation hope to inspire in all of us,” Donald O. Mutti, OD, PhD, FAAO, Awards Committee chair, said in a press release from the AAO.

Chris A. Johnson, PhD, DSc, FAAO, has been awarded the Charles F. Prentice Medal and Lecture Award, and Fiona J. Stapleton, MCOptom, PhD, FAAO, received the Glenn A. Fry Award and Lecture from the AAO Foundation.

Paul E. Berman, OD, FAAO, was posthumously awarded the AAO-Essilor Award for Outstanding International Contributions to Optometry, and David B. Elliot, PhD, MCOptom, FAAO, received the William Feinbloom Award.

According to the release, the Brien Holden Humanitarian Award went to Akio Kanai, OD, and Kovin S. Naidoo, OD, PhD, FAAO, received the Carel C. Koch Memorial Medal Award. The Julius F. Neumueller Award in Optics from the AAO Foundation went to Jacob A. Broff, OD, MSl Angeline Nguyen, OD; and Jenna L. Wayne, OD. Tammy P. Than, OD, FAAO, was awarded the Vincent Ellerbrock Clinician Educator Award; Bernard J Dolan, OD, MS, FAAO, received the Eminent Service Award; and Patricia K. Hrynchack, OD, FAAO, was awarded the Michael G. Harris Family Award for Excellence in Optometric Education from the AAO Foundation.

The Garland W. Clay Award was given to Gregory L. Goodrich, PhD, FAAO, Heidi M. Flyg, OD, Jennine E. Kirby, OD, Chea-Yo Chang, OD, FAAO, and Gary L. Martinsen, OD, PhD, FAAO.

The Max Shapero Memorial Lecture Award and the Founders’ Award — which recognizes individuals who excel in cornea, contact lenses and refractive technologies — was given to Helen A. Swarbrick, PhD, FAAO, and Primary Care Optometry News Editorial Board Member Jerome A. Legerton, OD, MS, FAAO, respectively.

Finally, the AAO Foundation awarded the Henry B. Peters Award for Public Health and Environmental Vision to Robert D. Newcomb, OD, MPH, FAAO.

The award recipients will be honored during the AAO’s annual meeting — Academy 2018 — in San Antonio.

“The winners represent the highest level of accomplishment in vision research, vision care, education and improvement of the visual welfare of all,” Mutti said in the release.
