The Illinois College of Optometry has announced that the board of trustees has appointed Mark Colip, OD, as the sixth president of the college.

“It was important to the board to identify the most qualified candidate to lead ICO and continue the longstanding tradition of excellence in optometric education,” Karen Eng, OD, chairman of the Illinois College of Optometry board of trustees, said in a press release from ICO. “Dr. Colip is well-known and highly respected for his integrity, work ethic and long tenure with increasing levels of responsibility along the way.”

Colip, who is a graduate of ICO and brings years of experience in optometry and higher education administration, will be responsible for advancing the mission of ICO when he takes office on Aug. 6.

For the past 15 years, Colip was a faculty member at ICO and worked as part of the senior administration. He also chaired the admissions committee since 1993. In 2004, he was appointed to vice president for student affairs and further expanded his role in 2009, when he became vice president for student, alumni and college development.

Because of Colip, steward contributions surpassed $4 million in both 2012 and 2014, according to the release. Additionally, Colip has volunteered as a consultant for the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education and worked with the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry’s student affairs and development officers special interest groups. Colip also has experience with international medical mission work, according to the release.

“I am humbled by the confidence that the ICO board has placed in me and enthusiastic about the opportunity and challenges ahead as we continue to educate outstanding clinical optometrists,” Colip said in the release. “ICO has a long and prestigious reputation and history of leadership in the profession. We have an incredibly talented and dedicated faculty, staff and student body, and I look forward to working with everyone to advance ICO’s mission.”
