Prevent Blindness announced its plans to dedicate the month of May to educating the public on the damage UV exposure can cause to vision, according to a press release from the organization.

Eye exposure to the sun can have both immediate effects, such as corneal sunburn, and long-term impact, such as the development of age-related macular degeneration, cataract, pterygium and cancer, according to the release.

Prevent Blindness advised consumers to carefully read labels before purchasing sunglasses. The organization recommends wearing only sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of UV-A and UV-B rays and combining this with a wide-brimmed hat.

“Consistently wearing effective UV eye protection is a habit that we should practice year-round, not just in the warm-weather months,” Jeff Todd, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness, said in the release. “By wearing UV-blocking sunglasses and a visor, we can help protect our vision today and for years to come.”
