Congressional briefing on contact lens safety takes place today

The Health Care Alliance for Patient Safety is holding a congressional briefing today to discuss the importance of protecting the safety of patients who wear contact lenses.

Attendees will include optometrists from across the U.S., congressional staff and alliance suppo0rters, according to a press release from the alliance.

The briefing will focus on four key areas:

  • maintaining a strong doctor-patient relationship;
  • the importance of the safe, healthy and effective use of medical devices;
  • the recognition of the inviolability of a patient’s prescription; and
  • regulatory enforcement.

The panel will be moderated by alliance chair Deanna Alexander, OD. Other panelists will include: Michele L. Andrews, OD, senior director, North America professional and academic affairs, CooperVision; Carol L. Alexander, OD, director, professional communication and vision care, Johnson & Johnson Vision; and Jeff Sonsino, OD, past president of the American Optometric Association’s Contact Lens & Cornea Section and a private practitioner from Nashville, Tenn.
