Specsy, a Canadian-based company, will announce the launch of its custom 3D printed eye wear line to the U.S. market at Vision Expo East.

According to a press release from Specsy, the custom frames are designed through augmented reality and 3D scanning. The physical frames are then created with Specsy’s in-house multicolor 3D printer.

Optical professionals are provided with an app that uses augmented reality to design frames for individual patients during office visits. The frames can be tailored to not only individulaized technical requirements, but the patient’s aesthetic preferences as well, according to the release. Specsy’s core collection offers plastic resin frames, although the company hopes to have custom metal frame options in late 2018.

“After extensive research and development, we are thrilled to be introducing cutting-edge innovation and technology to the optical field" Milan Madhavji, Specsy's chief technology officer, said in the release. "Specsy will change the way optical professionals approach frame fitting by removing any restrictions currently faced when working with a fixed inventory of frames."
