VIDEO: Cryopreserved amniotic membrane stimulates regenerative process

ATLANTA – Greg Caldwell, OD, said here at SECO that a cryopreserved amniotic membrane, such as the Prokera (BioTissue), maintains its natural biologics and can provide a true regenerative process for treating recurrent corneal erosion, infectious keratitis and dry eye disease.

“I used to use it for the train wrecks – filamentary keratitis, neurotrophic ulcers, superficial punctate keratitis that just wouldn’t go away,” Caldwell said. “Now If I’m starting to add Restasis (cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion 0.05%, Allergan) or Xiidra (lifitegrast ophthalmic solution 5%, Shire), getting into that moderate treatment, I’m moving into a Prokera membrane for those patients.
