Study results from the Brien Holden Vision Institute suggest that if a multifocal contact lens wearer is not satisfied with the lenses at fitting, they are unlikely to be satisfied after the trial period.

The usefulness of subjective ratings such as wearer surveys relates especially with the wearer being willing to purchase the contacts at fitting and assessment, according to researchers.

The retrospective analysis included 55 participants using Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia (Johnson & Johnson Vision Care) and Air Optix Aqua Multifocal (Alcon Laboratories) for a trial period of 1 week.

Subjective questionnaires were administered at initial fitting, and two take-home questionnaires were completed at days 2 and 4 and at assessment at least 5 days after fitting.

Questionnaires polled subjects about vision clarity, lack of ghosting, vision stability, vision while driving, overall vision satisfaction, willingness to purchase and comfort. Researchers also collected acuity-based measures.

Hyperopes and myopes were eligible, and participants were not excluded based on their contact lens history.

After a 2-day washout period from study lens wear, 46 participants returned to complete the same procedures with the alternative contact lens.

Researchers found a significant decline in vision satisfaction and comfort between the fitting and assessment visits.

The lack of ghosting at near at night was found to have a significantly lower rating at the assessment visit compared with the take-home questionnaires.

Researchers did not find differences between any visits in vision clarity at distance and vision stability. However, significant differences were found in vision clarity at intermediate and near and lack of ghosting at distance, intermediate and near, according to researchers.

Hyperopes showed greater reduction compared with myopes in vision satisfaction over time between fitting and assessment visits.

At the fitting visit, 65% of participants were willing to purchase the contact lenses trialed and decreased to only 41% at the assessment.

The researchers concluded that the lack of difference between the subjective ratings with the take-home questionnaires and assessment visits may be due to adaptation. – by Abigail Sutton
