Researchers suggest that coenzyme Q10 eye drops can be considered an important adjuvant therapeutic agent promoting corneal epithelial wound healing in challenging cases of refractory corneal ulcers, according to a study published in Eye & Contact Lens.

Six cases of refractory corneal ulcers that did not heal with conventional therapy recovered after coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) was added.

Two cases responded to CoQ10 eye drops within 1 to 2 weeks, and complete corneal healing was observed in four cases between weeks 4 and 8.

The eye drops may promote corneal epithelial wound healing, researchers wrote.

In addition to the CoQ10 mitochondrial bioenergetic effect, it also regulates mitochondrial apoptosis through modulation of the permeability transition pore, they said. It also serves as a free radical scavenger to protect against oxidative damages to the mitochondrial and lipid membranes.

Treatment with CoQ10 might have a positive effect in restoring the subbasal plexus of the cornea, resulting in faster corneal healing, particularly in the neurotrophic cornea, according to researchers. – by Abigail Sutton
