Conn. legislation requires office visit for contact lens Rx

Recently proposed legislation in Connecticut states that a provider may not use the data or information obtained from the administration of a test using a remote refractive device as the sole basis for issuing an initial prescription or renewing an initial prescription.

Under HB 6012, no provider would issue an initial prescription to or renew an initial prescription for a patient without having performed an in-person evaluation and an eye examination, as introduced by Rep. Kevin Ryan.

The expiration date of an initial contact lens prescription would be 1 year after the date of issuance, and a contact lens prescription that is a renewal of an initial contact lens prescription would not be earlier than 1 year after the date of issuance or later than 2 years after the date of issuance, unless the patient's history or current circumstances establish a reasonable probability of changes in the patient's vision.

The bill is known as “An Act Concerning Consumer Protection in Eye Care” and has been referred to the Office of Legislative Research and Office of Fiscal Analysis.
