Alaska’s Senate Bill 36 and House Bill 103 seek to grant the state’s board of optometry control of Alaskan optometrists’ scope of practice.

Specifically, SB 36A says the board shall adopt regulations “describing the scope of practice for a licensee to perform ophthalmic surgery and noninvasive procedures.”

HB 103C says the board shall “publish advisory opinions regarding whether optometry practice procedures or policies comply with acceptable standards of the practice of optometry, as provided under this chapter.”

HB 103 was referred to the Finance Committee April 3. It was introduced Feb. 3 by Rep. Ivy Spohnholz and Rep. Sam Kito III.

SB 36 was referred to the Finance Committee Feb. 17. It was sponsored by Sen. Cathy Giessel and was introduced on Jan. 25.
