FDA encourages proper use of hydrogen peroxide solutions
The FDA published a consumer update on proper handling of hydrogen peroxide contact lens solution, cautioning users that the red warning label and red tip on the bottle are reminders that they require special handling.
The FDA update stated that it is essential for every patient to talk to an eye care provider about the best cleaning and disinfecting method and that incorrect care of contacts can increase the risk of eye infections and injury and could cause blindness.
The consumer update explains how hydrogen peroxide solutions work and that they are preservative-free, but not risk-free.
Users are urged to read all warning labels in advance and be sure to follow the hydrogen peroxide disinfecting process with a neutralizer to eliminate stinging, burning or damage to the eye.
The FDA encourages health care professionals, patients, care givers and consumers to submit voluntary reports of problems with medical products to MedWatch, FDA’s Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program.
