J&J: Acuvue Oasys 1-day for astigmatism covers most toric needs

ATLANTA – “Acuvue has continued to broaden its portfolio of contact lenses, which is inspired by the natural function of the eye and focuses on a patient’s individual needs,” Weslie Hamada, OD, associate director professional affairs, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Inc., said during a media breakfast at SECO.

Eight out of 10 patients reported tired eyes in a survey the company conducted, she said.

“Tiredness is even more reported than dryness or irritation with contact lenses and is exactly why J&J researchers first developed the HydroLuxe technology about 1 year ago,” Hamada said.

“With Acuvue Oasys 1-Day for astigmatism doctors will have full confidence that the first pair of lenses that they pick out will be the pair the patient leaves with,” she said.

Patients wearing this lens achieve 20/20 monocular visual acuity or better with the lens, according to the company’s clinical validation studies, she said.

To reach the most astigmatic patients as possible, J&J targeted the most common refractive errors across the population, she said.

“This results in 2,260 parameters and covers nearly 90% of all astigmatic eyes,” Hamada said.

The HydroLuxe design creates a water-loving environment in the eye and utilizes a blink stabilization design, which uses the function of the eyelid to keep it in place and offers a prism-free ocular zone. This lens cannot be worn upside down, she said.

A total of 99% of wearers find success in the first fit, she reported.

“By adding this lens to our Oasys 1-day sphere lens, we now have a family of lenses that covers spherical and astigmatic patients,” Hamada concluded. – by Abigail Sutton
