Patients report 30 days of comfort with lotrafilcon B lenses

Issue: January 2017

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Researchers found that patients wearing lotrafilcon B lenses experienced consistent comfort throughout the month, as recorded through daily text message and a 30-day recall Likert item, according to a poster presented here at the American Academy of Optometry meeting.

Masked soft contact lens wearers wore lotrafilcon B lenses for 1 month and rated their comfort by text, using a 1 to10 scale after about 6 hours of lens wear from day 1 to 30.

On day 31, subjects reported their agreement on a 4-point Likert scale to the phrase: “These lenses provided the same excellent comfort at the end of the month as they did at the beginning of the month.”

On day 31 subjects inserted and wore new lotrafilcon B lenses for 6 hours and rated comfort via text; they were masked to the fact the lenses were new, according to the researchers.

The overall mean change in daily comfort across the month for lotrafilcon B was -0.19. In all, 71% of subjects agreed to the monthly recall comfort Likert item.

The researchers reported that the comfort of the 30-day worn lens was noninferior to the comfort of the masked new lens for lotrafilcon B.

“As lotrafilcon B silicone hydrogel lenses (Air Optix brand) have a plasma surface treatment that provides both a wettable lens surface and resists deposits throughout the month, we were not too surprised by the fact that the comfort [was] consistent throughout the month,” researcher Jessie Lemp, PhD, told Primary Care Optometry News in an interview.

She said the comfort reported via daily text messaging “maintained high and consistent across the month.” – by Abigail Sutton
