Most adults do not discuss digital device usage with ODs
A nationwide survey by the Vision Council found that 68.5% of Americans have not discussed their digital device usage with their eye care provider, the group announced in a press release.
The council also found that 73.5% report not knowing that eye wear can be used to protect the eyes from blue light exposure and digital eye strain.
The council shared results of the survey, which included 9,840 American adults nationwide, at the Consumer Electronics Show.
Other key findings were:
87% use digital devices more than 2 hours per day, and more than 52% regularly use two digital devices simultaneously;
76.5% of parents indicate that their children receive more than 2 hours of screen time per day, and 55.6% say their children experience symptoms of digital eye strain after those 2 hours; and
While 78.3% of parents are concerned about the impact of digital device use on their children, only 29.1% take their child for an annual eye exam as part of back-to-school preparation.
The Vision Council has launched a consumer outreach initiative based on the survey results detailing the benefits of computer glasses and coatings, demonstrating the latest in eye wear technology and offering additional solutions for individuals to minimize digital eye strain, according to the release.
Additionally, the Vision Council is working to educate providers on the usage and recommendation of computer eye wear and other lens coatings to prevent digital eye strain and protection from blue light through educational sessions at Vision Expo East.
