AAO: Vision screening identifies children in need of care

While a comprehensive eye examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist is preferable, not all children have access to professional eye exams, according to the statement by the American Academy of Optometry.

Vision screenings can serve a useful role in meeting the vision needs of children by reaching those in need of professional eye care through schools, community centers or medical homes.

The AAO stressed the importance of evidenced-based screening procedures to minimize under- and over-referrals.

To make a formal diagnosis and initiate treatment, the group recommends comprehensive eye examinations and notes that vision screening cannot detect all vision problems.

It is necessary for parents, health care providers and community leaders be informed of the differences between vision screenings and comprehensive eye examinations and the role that each plays, according to statement from the AAO.

The policy statement was developed by the AAO’s Binocular Vision, Perception and Pediatric Optometry Section and Public Health and Environmental Vision Section,
