The American Optometric Association is supporting the CDC-organized Contact Health Lens Week through media outreach, according to a press release.
The AOA reported that this week they have supported the health care campaign by participating in a Twitter chat and by sharing a list of 10 facts and tips through mainstream media, including CBS News.
This list was developed by Andrea Thau, OD, president of the American Optometric Associations:
1. Make a point to visit your eye doctor every year.
2. Buy your contact lenses from a trusted source.
3. Always check your prescription before wearing your contacts.
4. Do not panic if your lens is “lost” in your eye.
5. You can have the eye color you always wanted.
6. When it comes to your contacts, say “no” to sharing.
7. Clean and rinse lenses with proper solutions, not tap water.
8. Keep your lens case clean.
9. No matter how tired you are, do not sleep in your contacts.
10. Do not over wear your lenses.
“While patients — especially younger patients — are really excited about being fitted with contact lenses, I stress to them that contact lenses are medical devices that have to be properly fitted, evaluated and that they must adhere to proper contact lens care,” Thau said in the release. “If they don’t follow my guidance, they can end up with serious eye problems.”
