ABB Optical: Daily disposables most popular contact lens modality

Daily disposable contact lenses make up 37% of overall lens sales among independent eye care providers; however, this market is underdeveloped, according to ABB Optical.

Aaron See, ABB Optical Group’s vice president of marketing, said the company’s data is skewed more toward independent eye care providers (ECPs).

“The fitting and prescribing trends of independent ECPs tend to be more reliable indicators of the overall health of the industry rather than data representing other retail channels,” he said in a press release from the company.

The U.S. optical industry has, “the potential to add $1 billion in incremental revenue if it were to reach global averages of disposable sales,” the company said. A patient fit for an annual supply of daily disposables will typically drive 2.6 times more practice revenue than one fit for a reusable lens.

The company said the wholesale market for daily disposables is the U.S. increased 22% in 2015, with year-to-date growth at more than 28%.
