Free service assists with prior authorizations for prescriptions

BOSTON – PARx helps physicians through the process when a drug they prescribe requires prior authorization from the insurer.

Dan Rubin, PARx Solutions CEO, told Primary Care Optometry News here at Optometry’s Meeting that this service, which is available at no cost to the practice, manages the prescription so the doctor or staff need not deal with the insurance company.

He explained that a practice must first register with PARx before using its services, which involves signing a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement and providing the doctor’s National Provider Identifier number. The process takes about 5 minutes, he said.

When a doctor prescribes a drug that requires prior authorization (PA), or if the practice is contacted by the pharmacy for a PA, a staff member logs onto the PARx web-based HIPAA-compliant portal and submits the request in a 3- to 4-minute process, Rubin said. The request goes to the PARx call center, where it is reviewed by staff doctors or physician assistants, who communicate with the plan and handle any follow-up, such as requests for imaging.

Eye care providers (ECPs) make up the largest segment of the company’s business, Rubin said, with 11,000 ECPs registered for the service. He said PARx works with most of the big drug companies in eye care. The drug manufacturers pay PARx, which is how the service can be offered at no charge to physicians.

Rubin said the company averages 80% approval.
