BOSTON – Optometry’s Meeting attendance is up, the educational offerings are popular and exhibitor support has grown, Jon Hymes, AOA executive director, told the AOA House of Delegates.

“The OM brand is getting stronger,” he said.

He recognized the association’s fight to protect patient safety at the state and federal level against online refracting services.

Hymes noted the AOA’s success in its partnership with the Think About Your Eyes campaign

so that tens of millions people heard the message about the importance of annual eye exams.

He said the AOA shaped how the media, legislators and Congress look at patient access and ensuring safety.

“We battled back against groups and interests that mean to do our members harm,” he continued, including “mass retailers and multibillion-dollar vision plans.”

An alliance with the American Dental Association strengthened the fight against the anti-doctor abuses of insurance plans.

“We placed contact lens safety at the center of every conversation about legislation and regulation,” he added.

“We mobilized as never before to keep optometry the force that it needs to be.” – by Abigail Sutton
