Washington Redskins’ sports vision consultant: Don’t fear embracing your role in concussion rehab

BOSTON – “We shouldn’t be afraid to take ownership of concussion…As optometrists, we could really do some great good," Keith Smithson, OD, said here at Optometry’s Meeting. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s not a direct on-the-sideline concussion detection…but we are an integral part of vision rehab of an athlete with concussion and with the vision systems associated with concussion.”

Smithson is team optometrist for the Washington Wizards, Spirit, Mystics and Nationals and director of concussion rehabilitation and Performance Vision Center at Northern Virginia Doctors of Optometry. He also consults for the Washington Redskins.

“Major medical hospital systems and concussion centers are searching out optometry as the gatekeeper of concussion rehab,” he added.
