Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Inc. presented data during the Netherlands Contact Lens Conference that showed 1-Day Acuvue Moist Brand Contact Lenses for astigmatism (etafilcon A) resulted in significant improvements to quality of life measures compared to its spherical soft contact lens equivalent for patients with astigmatism, according to a press release.

“This study shows that visual acuity is significantly improved by about one line vs. spherical lenses, and there is no difference in fitting time or the number of lenses needed to fit a toric lens – we hope this study can put to rest some of the misconceptions about difficulties fitting astigmats,” Jason J. Nichols, OD, MPH, PhD, lead investigator, said in the release.

Researchers fitted 60 current soft contact lens wearers 18 to 45 years old with -0.75 D to 1.75 D with a nontoric soft lens in both eyes for 1 week and its toric counterpart for 1 week.

Results showed improved visual quality of life scores for patients wearing the toric compared to those wearing the nontoric lens (overall: 74.9% vs. 67.6%; vision clarity: 75.7% vs. 50.1%; correction satisfaction: 79.7 vs. 62.0%), according to the release.
