The National Institutes of Health announced it will fund the development of three innovative co-robots, which work cooperatively with people, as part of the National Robotics Initiative.

The goal is to create a hand-worn device using computer vision that identifies an object in the visually impaired user’s environment, determines misalignment between the user’s hand and the object, and then conveys the hand motion needed to grasp it, according to a press release from the National Eye Institute.

The robot could be useful in identifying small obstacles and moving them out of the way and in opening door knobs, the NEI said.

A total of $2.2 million will be invested into the project for the next 5 years.
