One-third of US diabetes patients do not receive dilated eye exams
A survey from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals found that less than half of adults in the U.S. with diabetes recognize their risk for vision loss, according to a company press release.
Less than one-fifth (18%) of respondents were familiar with diabetic macular edema, the survey indicated.
Market Research Group at Everyday Health Inc. conducted the research on behalf of Regeneron.
According to the survey, 30% of respondents do not get an annual comprehensive dilated eye exam, and 56% were not aware that the exam is recommended by the National Eye Institute for those with diabetes.
Regeneron launched www.DiabetesSightRisk.com, offering information on diabetic eye diseases including facts and symptoms.
Furthermore, the company teamed up with Intelligent Retinal Imaging Systems on a month-long national initiative, the 30/30 Campaign, which held about 30 diabetic retinopathy screening events across the U.S. during November, according the release.
