The Federal Trade Commission is seeking public comment on the Contact Lens Rule, which requires eye care providers to give consumers a copy of their prescription upon completion of a contact lens fitting and to verify or provide prescriptions to authorized third parties.

The deadline for comments is today.

The rule also only allows the sale of contact lenses in accordance with a prescription that the seller has either acquired from the patient or prescriber or has confirmed through communication with the prescriber, according to the FTC.

Congress enacted the Fairness to Contact Lens Consumers Act in 2003. The FTC promulgated the Contact Lens Rule on July 2, 2004, the FTC website states, and the rule went into effect Aug. 2, 2004.

Specifically, the FTC is now interested in comments about the efficiency, cost, benefits and regulatory impact of the rule.
