Optometry Giving Sight awards medals to graduates
Optometry Giving Sight announced that they have awarded three academic medals to graduating students from the School of Optometry at Mzuzu University in Malawi, Africa, according to a press release.
The awards, named for three of Optometry Giving Sight’s Chairman’s Club members, were presented at the graduation ceremony on Aug. 21.
The Dr. John McCall Academic Medal for Outstanding Achievement was awarded to Jaliff Chitseko, the Dr. Bobby and Mrs. Jayne Christensen Academic Medal for Excellence was awarded to Symon Chikumba and the Dr. Glenn and Mrs. Clairice Ellisor Academic Medal for Merit, awarded to Thandiwe Munthali. McCall is a member of the Primary Care Optometry News Editorial Board.
Of particular note is the award to Thandiwe Munthali, as she is one of only two women to have graduated from this course to date.
Currently, the Mzuzu University has produced 26 graduates and has a further 34 students completing their studies. Sara McGowan, OD, a graduate of the University of Alabama, currently serves as head of the school. The students who have graduated, as well as those still studying, will be deployed to civil service in government hospitals.
The Chairman’s Club Medals have also been awarded to recent graduates in Eritrea. Additional presentations will be made over the coming months in Nicaragua and Vietnam.
