1-800-CONTACTS released a survey showing a correlation between online consumers of contact lenses and proper lens wear and care practices.

Conducted by Survey Sampling International (SSI), the April 2015 study consisted of 2,000 adult contact lens wearing participants, ages 18 to 49 years.

This survey, as well as others, have been highlighted during the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Contact Lens Health Week campaign. The campaign was designed by the CDC to educate Americans on proper contact lens practices in an effort to prevent eye care complications or discomfort.

According to the SSI study, 70% of online purchasers reported that they replace their lenses most of the time in accordance with replacement recommendations. This is in comparison to the 61% who answered the same but purchase lenses from their eye doctors. The lower cost of purchasing online has been speculated as a contributing factor to online purchasers replacing their lenses more frequently, according to the press release.

The study also showed that 60% of online purchasers reported that they replace their cases every 9 months or less, and 49% were more likely to wash their hands every time they remove and insert their lenses. Of those that purchase from their eye doctor, 51% reported regular replacement of cases, and 43% reported regularly washing their hands.
