A recent poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies showed that the majority of contact lens consumers are concerned about their privacy in online purchases, according to a press release from See Clearly, America.

Nearly 75% of the consumers polled answered that they felt it riskier to obtain their contact lenses from online and other sources than to purchase directly from their local eye doctor. The concern was based largely on the need to enter personal data, including prescriptions, into online systems. Less than 10% responded that they felt using online and other sources for their purchases would be better safeguarded.

The survey also found a majority preference from consumers to receive health care advice from a personal eye doctor than any other source. This portion of the survey found 89% of consumers answered positively that they feel their family eye doctor provides the most personalized service and cares the most about a patient’s eye health, according to the release.

Additionally, 93% agreed that their family eye doctor was the best source of information.

“Contact lenses are among the safest forms of vision correction when patients follow the proper care and wearing instructions, as provided by a doctor of optometry or other eye doctor,” Kevin Lawlor, spokesperson for See Clearly, America, said in the release. “The survey shows consumers say they trust their family eye doctor.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will be continuing their annual “National Contact Lens Health Week,” this week, Aug. 24 to 28. This event is a continued effort to inform and educate American contact lens consumers on proper contact lens use and care to better prevent eye infections.
