SEATTLE – Johnson & Johnson Vision Care announced the nationwide availability of its 1-Day Acuvue Moist brand multifocal contact lenses here at Optometry’s Meeting.

The company said in a press announcement that the Moist multifocal “has been created with uniquely optimized optic designs to address the natural variations in pupil size according to age and refractive power.”

Kurt J. Moody, OD, FAAO, FBCLA, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Inc. (JJVCI) global platform director for presbyopia and co-creator of the new lens, said that the Moist platform was chosen for this multifocal because dryness is a big problem that contributes to contact lens dropout.

He told Primary Care Optometry News that the Moist multifocal rounds out the Moist family that also includes lenses available in sphere, toric and eye enhancement.

“As your needs change, you can stay in the Moist family your whole life,” he said.

Moody said there are no plans to discontinue the Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia. “People will find that this lens [the Moist multifocal] performs better, and we’ll let the market do what it will with that.”

Because the optics of the Moist multifocal are optimized to coincide with the natural variation of the pupil, “we have 183 designs,” he added.

“Everyone says there’s a ‘sweet spot,’ which is -2.50 D to -3 D, low to mid add [in most multifocals],” Moody said. “The reason people were saying that is because the lens was designed to that pupil size. We conducted a study to look at variation with age and refractive range; +6 D to -9 D in 0.25-D steps is our sweet spot.” – by Nancy Hemphill, ELS, FAAO
