NovaBay Pharmaceuticals announced FDA approval of its intelli-Case for disinfecting contact lenses with hydrogen peroxide.

The new case monitors the hydrogen peroxide solution and indicates with blinking LED lights when the contact lenses are ready to wear, the company stated in a press release.

Hydrogen peroxide disinfection is considered the gold standard for contact lens disinfection, but it can be “tricky to use,” NovaBay said. Concentrations that are too low do not fully disinfect the lenses and those that are too high can irritate the eye.

“The intelli-Case monitors the neutralization of hydrogen peroxide during the disinfection cycle with sophisticated microprocessor electronics embedded in the cap of what otherwise looks like a standard peroxide lens case,” the release stated. “The high-tech cap has three LED lights labeled ‘unsafe,’ ‘busy’ and ‘ready.’ Lenses are placed into the case with hydrogen peroxide solution. The green light (‘ready’) blinks when lenses are safe to insert into the eyes and continues to blink green until contact lenses are removed from the case.”

“We believe that intelli-Case can revolutionize contact lens care by making the peroxide disinfection system as simple as using multipurpose solutions,” Ron Najafi, PhD, NovaBay’s president and CEO, said in the release.
